This week's "According to pwnRank" list should come as no surprise. In honor of Halloween, we're counting down the best survival horror games ever.

While not for everyone, the survival horror genre has produced some excellent games. The best horror titles masterfully key into your senses, heighten them and then catch you off-guard when you least expect it.

This list includes games from both sides of the survival horror spectrum. In one vein, you have games which utilize horrifying out-of-nowhere scare tactics, to rattle you. Alternatively, you have the games that really mess with your head; psychological horror. Rather than zombies or mutants popping up randomly around corners, causing you to curse and involuntarily fling your cheetos all over the room, you might have to endure eerie indentifiable noises throughout the game, or witness terrifying atrocities taken out on other characters; which you can only assume will be turned turned toward you, at some point.

Whatever the flavor, these survival horror titles have surely elevated millions of heart rates, since the genre took hold. Many of them are well worth playing through again, or for the first time. If you're unfamiliar with the genre, may we suggest one thing: play with the lights on.
