In the coming weeks and months, there are several highly-anticipated First-Person Shooters (FPS) coming out for next gen consoles;
Far Cry 4,
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and a couple of new
Halo installments, just to name a few.
We thought it would make sense to pave the way for these new FPS titans, by paying homage to the greatest FPS releases of all-time; a list of gaming greatness which spans 22 years.
The FPS genre is an interesting one. On one hand, you have the traditional competitive deathmatch or plain old shoot-em-up offerings, starting with
Wolfenstein and
Doom, which paved the way for
Goldeneye,
Unreal Tournament,
Halo and
Call of Duty. While many of these oftentimes include great campaigns, multiplayer is where they sparkle. On the other hand, series like
Half-Life,
Bioshock and
Far Cry have sprung up, offering amazing storylines, complex characters, diverse scores and more. No matter which side of the coin you land on, the games on this list will not disappoint.
As a reminder, we're focusing on FIRST-person shooters here. There are many other excellent shooters such as
Gears of War and
Uncharted, however, they don't fit the FPS criteria.
Also, defining "first-person shooter" can be tricky. We went with our guts, and decided to use traditional "FPS" titles, as well as games considered to be "FPS Action-Adventure" and "FPS Action-RPG"; the common denominator of course being that the actual "shooter" element plays a key role in the game. We did not include "FPS Stealth titles", as the "shooter" element is typically trumped by tactical and stealth game play.
Enough with the boring stuff. Here are the "Top 30 First-Person Shooters of All-Time",
