In case you've been locked in another castle, Super Mario turned 30 earlier this week. On September 13, 1985, Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan. Now, to be clear, Mario existed before 1985 - not only in the original Mario Bros. arcade game (1983), but also in Donkey Kong (1981). Let's be honest though - he wasn't really that great until he became "Super". So we're going to roll with it.
Anyway, now that we have 30+ years of the Mario adventures to look back on, we thought we'd highlight the best of the best. There have been a few duds over the years, but for the most part, Nintendo has done a tremendous job with the franchise (cough-StarWarsGames-cough). Mario games make up 10% of the
Top 100 Video Games of All-Time. That's pretty good. The original "Super" installment - Super Mario Bros. - has definitely stood the test of time, coming in at #14 overall. In fact, it's ranked #1 on several of the
contributing lists; not only for its influence on the gaming world, but also just because it's still really dang fun to play.
You'll notice that this list spans several genres. Again, we're highlighting the franchise as a whole, not just the "Super Mario Bros." series (Donkey Kong not included - #77 overall).
Here are the Top 25 Mario Games, according to pwnRank. Let's-a-go!
